| Recovery from Appendicitis - Judi's
good health made the recovery very quick, soon she was able to
haul 2x4's with the best of them. Good thing since the
wood stove arrived and hauling firewood in would soon become a
high priority item. Install Wood stove
- Speaking of wood-burning stoves it arrived late November
and by early December we had hired Larry the Sweep from Chim-Chimney
(no kidding) to help us install it. He did the hard work
of removing remnants of the old smokestack (a previous stove had
been removed years ago) and preparing it to connect to our new
wood burner. Meanwhile we did the light work of uncrating
and moving the 380 pound monster into place on the new hearth.
By December 18th it had accepted its first load of firewood and
was providing us with a warm glow and (hopefully) lower gas
bills.
Nutcracker Suite - Despite its small
size Homer has a very creative community and the highlight of
the holiday season is the Nutcracker. We went to the high
school prepared for the typical amateur production and we were
BLOWN AWAY! The cast numbered in the scores and they were
brilliant, the costumes were beautiful and the audience was
appreciative! It seemed that the whole population of the area
turned out for one of the performances. The leading
ballerina had performed in all shows since she was 5 years old
(i.e. the last 12 years) and she put on a magnificent show for
us!
Remodeling on Hold
- For a while Christmas decorations took priority over
remodeling.
Climate Action Plan - Since we have
been here we have followed the local government's activities on
Global Warming. The far-sighted mayor appointed a team 12
months ago to look into Global warming, its effects on Homer and
to solicit ideas for coping with it. A team led by Alan
Parks put together a world-class analysis and plan, and on
December 19 the City Council adopted the City of Homer Climate
Action Plan - which can be
viewed at this link. As an inducement, an anonymous
business-person donated $40,000 as seed money to help the city
on its way.
Christmas - Judi took advantage of the
extra room in our home and insisted on a tree more than 1' high
(which has been the norm on Long Passages for the last 14
years). So back out to our yard to look for candidates,
but they all seemed a little sparse, so we opted for the
lumber-store variety, perfect shape at 6' tall and quite full.
Judi did a yeoman's job of decorating and it was really
beautiful! Along with many strings of lights outside,
candles in the windows and snow on the ground it looked like
CHRISTMAS - our first on land in many years. A turkey
dinner and homemade cranberry sauce completed the day.
