April 2008

Homer, Alaska

Week ending 26 April 2008

Recycling Electronics - We spent Saturday helping the Homer community get rid of their collection of defunct electronics. It was an eye-opening experience as we filled huge boxes with laptops, printers, PDAs, coffee makers, radars, remotes, chargers, speakers, stereos, and all kind of 'stuff'. Beside the boxes we stacked pallets high with computers and televisions, even recent plasma TVs and finally a separate box accepted mobile phones. Overall we collected several tons of items, all destined to be dismantled to collect the metals and some parts.  The only items to be reused were the cell phones - to be given to soldiers in Iraq or elsewhere.

Moose Attack - Well, we heard it could happen but today we were on the receiving end of the wrath of a moose cow defending its calf - we'll let Faizel tell the story since he was in the thick of it.

Democratic Politics - Last month Bob was volunteered to be the Vice Chair for the local party.  Within a week the Chair had resigned his 3 positions and Bob was running the meeting and setting priorities and updating their website.  Hopefully we have recruited a replacement Chair, one that Bob can work with and try to make some headway in what has been a Republican stronghold for the last 15 years. For the latest news from the locals check out the website that Bob built.

Expressing Our Opinion - And our other pastime is writing letters to editors - here is our latest.

Sunshine Galore and Saving Energy- Spring has sprung, and although we have some vestiges of snow, our sun comes up around 0615 and sets around 945PM - and its only APRIL.  The bright sun, coupled with our wood-burning stove has meant that the heater in the main part of the house has not run since the beginning of MARCH!  With our thick insulation when the outside temperatures were near 10°F at night, the house remained above 55°F by morning.

Recycling Electronics- Judi jumped into this projects with 2 feet and within a couple of days had lined up a bunch of local businesses to donate about $400 of goods and services to those people who bring their obsolete stuff to the E-recycling event.  We still encourage anyone to check the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition (SVTC) for more information. For a cute synopsis of how much toxic byproducts there are from our high-consumer society, it is well worth 20 minutes to watch the video from The Story of Stuff.

Remodeling progress - The apartment is getting down to the short strokes and is looking quite good.  We have some furniture coming at the end of April and the pieces we are building are coming together like an assembly line - check one example to the left. Next update we'll include a pictorial. So the projects, and progress, to date are:

Faizel reports: Wow, those slow, ambling beasts they call 'moose' can really move when they want to.  All day I have been smelling strange odors and barking into the woods to keep any stray threats away.  On this warm afternoon my keepers became a bit cavalier about the front door and left it open while carrying stuff to the garage and I did what any self-respecting canine would do - I bolted to examine these odors up close.  I did pretty well too 'cause I ran down the hill and got to bark up close with a fellow that was almost my size (well, not really, it was about 4' high at the shoulder but compared to what came next...).  He stood his ground and I stood mine, ignoring my keeper's yells to 'come', and then Mama came around the bend very quickly!  She apparently saw me as a small wolf and tried to stomp me into the ground - I yelped and ran after taking a glancing blow, I think the snow helped cushion it a little and this time I did head for my keepers!  Mama came up the hill to confront them as well, but they retreated to a safe distance and let the tension ease a bit as I scrambled on a round-about path towards them - keeping an eye on Mama.  Since then my keepers have collected a few lessons such as this and this and this, but apparently cats are OK - go figure!
